Ingredients
A tip from Apple-A: Don’t be put off by the use of sugar in this recipe. We want to teach kids the danger of eating too much sugar and how much is too much. This recipe uses sugar in small amounts, exactly as it should be used!
- 1 ¾ cups Oatmeal
- 4 medium apples, peeled and diced
- 8 tbsp Organic coconut oil
- ½ cup Organic raw brown sugar
- 1 tbsp Cinnamon to taste (optional)
- Vanilla bean paste to taste (optional)
- ½ cup water
- I tsp corn-starch

A tip from Apple-A: The base of this slice takes a while to set. You can use coconut oil to create the base as it melts when heated. You need to wait until this slice is completely cooled to get a nice clean cut.

Method
- Clean, clean, clean! Clean down all your work surfaces.
- Heat the oven to 190°C and line a square baking tin with parchment paper.
- In a small pan, add the apples, cinnamon, vanilla and corn-starch. Simmer on a low heat for 10 minutes. You want the apples to be cooked through but keep their shape. Stir to prevent the mixture from burning. If the mix is boiling quickly turn the heat down.
- The mixture is ready when the sauce has thickened. Take off the heat and leave to one side.
- Melt the coconut oil on a low heat and mix with the oats and raw sugar.
- Spoon ¾ of your oat mix into the baking pan and press down firmly with the back of a spoon.
- Pour your apple mixture on top of your base.
- Sprinkle your remaining oat mixture on top of your apples (don’t press the top layer of oats down).
- Bake for 30 minutes until the apple slices are a golden brown.
- Let them cool completely before slicing and serving.
