Do you have apples lingering in the fridge and don’t know what to do with them? This creative recipe means you don’t waste food! And the best thing is, you can add all kinds of fruit to it depending on what you have and what your little ones like.

Ingredients

A tip from Apple O’ Creed: I love adding raisins to my morning oatmeal! But you could also add low-fat peanut butter, blueberries, raspberries, or bananas!

  • 70g raisins
  • apple (grated, with skin on for more nutrients)
  • 80g rolled oats
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 125ml milk
  • Optional toppings for extra protein: nut or seed butter, honey, hemp seeds, chia seeds

A tip from Apple O’ Creed: For a gluten-free alternative, use gluten-free oats. For a dairy-free alternative, any non-dairy options can work, but I recommend oat milk!

Method

  1. Heat 1 ½ cups water in a medium pot over high heat.
  1. When it’s almost about to boil, lower to medium low heat and add all ingredients except the milk and optional toppings.
  1. Cook, stirring often, until the oats are softened and the water is absorbed, about 8-10 minutes (if any oatmeal sticks to the pan at any point, add a little more water).
  1. Put the lid on, remove from heat, and let sit for about 5 minutes.
  1. Stir in the milk and add optional toppings and serve warm.
